Thursday 1st August 2019. 1330 – 1420

Cloudy with intermittent sun. Cold, blustery, southerly breeze. Track dry.

No possums today, the 2 platypus seen were more interested in feeding on the opposite bank than entertaining us and although there were plenty of turtles they all looked depressed. Carpet still in residence but makes himself less visible each day. Did see a few birds and added the KPs to give a bit of colour.

Wednesday 31st July 2019. 1300 – 1350

Sunny with scattered cloud. No rain. Track dry.
Short of birds along the track today although had family of King Parrots in garden this morning. Brushtail Possum has gone walkabout but Carpet Snake still present although less easy to see. 4 Saw-Shelled Turtles at Log Jam and a large one in Platy Pool. While watching those on the logs a platypus arrived at out feet. It’s hard to get a shot any closer than this! Mum and joey Green Ringtail Possum at home in their regular tree and baby decided to give me a nice smile. A good day.

Tuesday 30th July. 0930 – 1025.

Overcast with light drizzle at end of walk. Track Dry.

A Spangled Drongo performed for me along Bunya St. Brushtail Possum and Carpet Snake were in same position, the latter displaying his tail today. Found solitary Green Ringtail Possum but in a new tree. I have noted that they tend to favour branches of a Casuarina where they pass through the denser foliage of a neighbouring tree. I have been scanning this particular tree for several years and today my patience was rewarded! Hard to get a decent image but limited success. Another less common sighting was 2 platypus in the same frame.. A slightly larger animal appeared to be following the other who dived and left in a hurry. Finally 2 solitary Sarus Cranes were honking at each other until they met virtually overhead and left together.

Spangled Drongo – Dicrurus bracteatus

Green sheen and red iris.

Carpet Snake – Morelia spilota

Displaying tail today. Must have had a good feed as hardly moved for 5 days.

Platypus – Ornithorhynchus anatinus

Smaller animal diving when approached by larger.

Sarus Crane – Grus antigone

Unusually close after 2 birds found each other.

Monday 29th July. 1300 – 1350.

Mostly sunny. Light breeze. No rain. Track Dry. Waited again until air warmed up and bees active. Brushtail Possum and Carpet Snake still in residence. 3 Platypus seen in various locations, one near Log Jam happy to pose. Yellow-Faced Honeyeater observed swooping down to surface of water on 4 occasions. Unable to see if picking up insects or perhaps drinking? Another flight of Sarus Cranes seen. Mother and joey Green Ringtail Possum in regular spot although baby having early afternoon ziz. Numerous visitors on track today and many had opportunity to be introduced to GRPs

Platypus – Ornithorhynchus anatinus

A bit more practice and I shall start giving them names!

Sunday 28th July. 1400 – 1450.

Cloudy all day with slight intermittent drizzle. Track remains dry.

Disappointing after yesterday but still managed to find creatures worth photographing. The Common Brushtail Possum remains in the same spot but ignored me today. The Carpet Snake also a fixture and for the first time showing tip of nose. A handsome Pacific Baza visited me and the solitary Platypus although surrounded by dense water weed provided a few unusual views.

Platypus – Orthorhynchus anatinus

Interesting decoration
Almost vertical shot. I can see right down your nose!

Pacific Baza – Aviceda subcristata

Nice view of crest and bill
Good set of talons.

Carpet Snake – Morelia spilota

Tip of nose visible at top.

Saturday 27th July 2019. 1300 – 1350

No Rain. Overcast with sunny periods. Light SE breeze. Track dry. Left home after lunch with Thomas. Common Brushtail Possum at Alumbah Pocket was kind enough to show face today and within 2 mins had spotted a Limholtz’s Tree Kangaroo from Lloyd’s Suspension Bridge. Well concealed by foliage but managed to find an angle where he was semi-exposed to x12 telephoto. Moved on to one of yesterdays Green Ringtail Possums opposite Snodgrass’s Pool and visited the Carpet Snake still in the same tree. Saw 4 platypus along the length of the creek, the last being in the Viewing Pool but only 2 were feeling cooperative.

Overcast with blustery wind but warmer than past few days. Track dry

Observed several platypus each day, several obliging, several turtles and today a Green Ringtail Possum with joey. A number of visitors including from Holland & New Zealand enjoyed them with me

Hi gorgeous!

Sunday 21st July 2019. 1410 – 1515

Warmer than yesterday. Overcast with minimal light rain this morning. Hence late start. Track dry.

Cody reluctant to walk again but at human equivalent age of 87 I suppose he is entitled. Thomas and I saw 2 Platypus, both in cooperative mood and 2 Green Ringtail Possums who were both weary and couldn’t really be bothered. Two Saw-Shelled Turtles also seen, one the smallest ever at about 5 cms.

Platypus – Ornithorhynchus anatinus

Near Snodgrass’s Pool. First seen at far side of creek but given a few minutes he approached right to the near bank weeds, nearly jumping with fright when he surfaced within 1 metre of Thomas.
This is what I call a closeup!

Saw-Shelled Turtle – Elseya dentata

Medium sized specimen on usual logs.
Minute (5 cms ) turtle on nearby log. Never seen one this small before.

Green Ringtail Possum

1) Also close to Snodgrass’s Pool. Quite hard to see in surrounding foliage but managed a sly peek from the creek side of the tree.
2) Further along the track. Tired and totally unresponsive. Perhaps had a large lunch?

Saturday 20th July. 0905 – 0950

Only 7 degs at 0700. Breeze light. Clear sunny sky. Track dry.

Will have to start going out later in day. Nothing of note seen along Petersons Creek Walk although some birds active on sunny side of Bunya Street. Could not blame Cody for remaining in bed.

White-Cheeked Honeyeater – Phylidonyris niger

Very attractive honeyeater with brilliant white cheek patch and yellow patch in folded wing.
Probable juvenile of above but can’t be sure.

Australian King Parrot – Alisterus scapullaris (female)

Female KP having a good feed. (Not the specimen seen today)

Rainbow Bee-Eater – Merops ornatus.

Pair of Bee-Eaters resting after taking breakfast from my hive! Too beautiful to chase away.
