KANGAROOS

Lumholtz’s Tree-kangaroo – Dendrolagus lumholzi

Lumholz’s Tree Kangaroo feeding and showing the length of it’s tail. The tail is used only for balance and is not prehensile.

A rare arboreal marsupial which spends it’s entire life in the trees except when forced to cross open ground to find a new tree. It differs from all other kangaroos in being able to move it’s hind legs independently which facilitates climbing. LTK is found only on the Atherton Tablelands where it has has evolved with the rain forest trees which provides the leaves it eats. It is more active at night but in fact sleeps for short periods both day and night with feeding activity between. Bennett’s Tree- Kangaroo is slightly larger and is only found north of the Daintree River. There are numerous similar species in Papua New Guinea.

Could well have been the original Teddy Bear!
What are you doing down there? Not the claws with which it grips the tree.
